Writing Letters With Preschoolers

Though it may seem like a topic for older children, much fun can be had in writing letters with your preschooler. While your child may not fully understand the process like an older child would, below are five tips for writing letters with your preschooler!

Think thematically

Take time to teach your preschooler about different topics they can write about. You can teach your child about the different purposes of writing a letter. For example, your preschooler can help you write a birthday note to an aunt or a letter to ask their teacher a question.

Teach about the envelope

Your preschooler may enjoy seeing the letter build from start to finish. The letter has a purpose, but your child can also learn about things like the return address, sending address, and where the stamp is placed. You can then take a trip to the post office or to a nearby post office box. If a trip to the post office isn’t in the cards, you can show your child how to place the envelope in the home mailbox and then put up the red flag for the postal worker.

Go over the basic parts of a letter

Even if your preschooler is nowhere close to being a writer, your child can still learn the most basic parts of a letter. You can teach your child how each letter has a greeting (“Dear”) and the signature (“Love”, “Sincerely”, “From”, etc.).

Model the entire process

Have your child sit near you when you are either typing or handwriting a letter. Your preschooler can then watch you write the basic parts. Your child may also enjoy signing the letter with you!

Allow your child to see the ending excitement

Let your child give you the words for “their letter”. You can type or handwrite their words. You can then be with your child when the letter is given to the receiver. This allows your child to see the joy that a letter can bring to another person. Enjoy the process!
