Gobble, gobble! It’s that time of year – Thanksgiving! Time to teach your preschooler about Thanksgiving and all of the fun and food that comes along with the holiday. Your preschooler will have a blast learning about the history and the traditions that come with Turkey Day!
The True Meaning of Thanksgiving
Even though delicious cranberry sauce and green bean casserole are usually the talk of the table on Thanksgiving, it is important to teach your preschooler the meaning behind Thanksgiving. Read them a children’s book focused around Thanksgiving, and discuss how a fall harvest celebration brought together Pilgrims and Native Americans. You can also print out coloring pages that feature cute Thanksgiving images. Your child will enjoy learning about this special holiday by having interactive activities.
Be Thankful
With Black Friday and Christmas right around the corner, we can get our minds fixated on the items we want rather than what we already have. Sit down with your preschooler and make a “hand turkey”. Trace their little hands on construction paper, cut it out, and transform it into a turkey! On each construction paper finger, write something that your child is thankful for. Teach your child the importance of thankfulness early!
Sharing is Caring
Continue teaching your child the theme of thankfulness by donating to those in need. Go to the grocery store and purchase canned foods and non-perishable items. Use this as an opportunity to explain to your child that some people do not get food served at home every night. Go through your child’s closet and donate items that do not fit them anymore. Your child will learn that some people are not as fortunate and will realize how rewarding it is to give back to the community. Your child will hopefully gain a better understanding of the importance of helping those in need.
Now you and your preschooler are set to have the best Thanksgiving ever! We hope it’s a day of full hearts and full stomachs!
