St. Patrick\u2019s Day isn\u2019t as big of a holiday as Christmas or Easter, but there are plenty of activities to enjoy with your preschooler and ways to teach your preschooler about the holiday.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

St. Patrick<\/span><\/h4>\n

St. Patrick\u2019s Day originated as a day to celebrate St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, who is credited with bringing the Christian faith to Ireland. Find a couple child friendly books about St. Patrick\u2019s Day to introduce the reason behind the holiday to your child.\u00a0 Online encyclopedias are a great place to learn more about him.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rainbows<\/span><\/h4>\n

Most people associate leprechauns with St. Patrick\u2019s Day and associate rainbows and pots of gold with leprechauns.\u00a0 Use this opportunity to teach your preschooler about the science behind rainbows and the colors that make up a rainbow.\u00a0 If the weather is nice, go outside to show your preschooler how to make a rainbow with the water hose.\u00a0 Stand with your back to the sun and create a mist of water with the water hose.\u00a0 As the sun shines through the mist of water, a rainbow will appear.\u00a0 <\/span>Bright Hub<\/span><\/a> explains how rainbows are made and provides a few fun activities to make a rainbow with your preschooler.\u00a0 They even give an idea for a fun chalk activity to create a rainbow art piece!<\/span><\/p>\n

Fine Motor Activities<\/span><\/h4>\n

Draw a shamrock outline on a sheet of green construction paper.\u00a0 Provide your preschooler with yellow or gold stickers to put on the outline of the shamrock.\u00a0 Pinching the stickers is a great fine motor activity and placing the stickers on the line is good for hand-eye coordination.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Grab some Froot Loops and yarn or a pipe cleaner.\u00a0 Invite your preschooler to help make a rainbow pattern and thread the cereal pieces onto the yarn or pipe cleaner.\u00a0 You can even make a nice fruity rainbow necklace to snack on later!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Letter Matching<\/span><\/h4>\n

Obtain some plastic gold coins and trace their shape onto a green sheet of paper.\u00a0 Write uppercase letters on the coins and lowercase letters on the circles on the paper.\u00a0 Allow your child to match the uppercase to the lowercase letters.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hide the gold coins around your house and write hints for your preschooler from the leprechaun.\u00a0 Your preschooler is sure to enjoy hunting for the leprechaun\u2019s gold and then placing the gold coins in alphabetical order!<\/span><\/p>\n
