Starting preschool can be scary for children. For some preschoolers that means tears, clinging to mom and dad, or refusing to go into the building. Even for children who did not previously deal with those types of behaviors, parents may notice that big life changes like starting preschool may cause separation anxiety. Here are a few tips to help you and your preschooler work through separation anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n

Role Play<\/span><\/h4>\n

In the weeks leading up to the start of school, begin having conversations with your child about what it will be like when school starts. Talk about your morning routines, how they will get to school, and what kinds of things they will do while they are there. If you are able to take a tour and let your preschooler see where they will walk in and go to class, that is even better. The more knowledge your child has, the more empowered they will feel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Practice Separation<\/span><\/h4>\n

If your child has never really been left in the care of someone else, start with short times away from them. Have a friend, relative, or babysitter stay with your child while you run an errand. Work up to a playdate with another trusted mom where you leave your child there for a couple of hours. Eventually, you can build up to a full day away from your child.<\/span><\/p>\n

Transitional Object<\/span><\/h4>\n

Choose something your child can bring to school that can remind them that you love them and are thinking of them even when you are apart. This could be a small stuffed animal, a family picture, or even a heart drawn on their hand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Goodbye Routine<\/span><\/h4>\n

Just as a morning routine can help your morning run more smoothly, a goodbye routine can help your goodbyes go a little more easily. Maybe you have a special saying or a favorite song, or make up a silly handshake. Practice your routine as you begin leaving your child or make it a part of your bedtime routine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first few days or even weeks can be a little stressful when your child is battling separation anxiety. Stay positive and keep working through the above strategies. Separation anxiety is very common at this age, and most likely, your child will calm down quickly once you are out of sight.<\/span><\/p>\n
