It is educational, fun, and can be done with household ingredients, making it the perfect activity for you and your little scientist to do together.

Before you begin this experiment, you will need to gather the following materials:

Clear jar

Honey

Light corn syrup

Blue dish soap

Olive oil

Rubbing alcohol

Water

Food coloring

Dropper

Introduce the concept of density to your child before you begin. This will help them understand what is about to happen. Explain to your child that everything is made up of tiny building blocks called molecules and some liquids have many molecules while others have only a few. Liquids with more molecules are heavier, or denser, and will stay at the bottom of the jar during the experiment.

After you have explained density to your preschooler, you are ready to begin your experiment! Start by having your preschooler pour the honey into the jar, making sure it does not touch the sides of your jar. Next, you will add the corn syrup to the jar, also not letting it touch the sides, after turning it purple with the food coloring. Then, follow with dish soap, water colored green with food coloring, and a thick layer of olive oil. Finally, color the rubbing alcohol red with food coloring before dropping the alcohol along the sides of the jar with a dropper. Make sure you and your preschooler do this carefully as you do not want to break through the layer of oil.

After pouring in the oil, you will see a beautiful rainbow in your jar! Hold it up to the light or move it to a windowsill without shaking it to admire your creation.

On your next free afternoon with your preschooler, give this easy and impressive science experiment a try! Your little scientist will love the end product and getting to explain it to anyone who visits your home.

If you enjoyed these tips, you’ll want to check out our previous blog on First Time Trick-or-Treating with Preschoolers!

Want to learn more about Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Waterside located in Richmond, Texas?
