It\u2019s no secret that reading is a huge part of a child\u2019s schooling.\u00a0 Children have to read for every subject they study in school.\u00a0 It is also no secret that some children dislike reading.\u00a0 Luckily, there are a few things you can do to help foster a love for reading in your preschooler.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Read with Your Preschooler<\/span><\/h4>\n

Make reading part of your daily life.\u00a0 Allow your preschooler to pick out books at either the library or bookstore that interest her.\u00a0 Display books around the house where your child plays to provide more opportunities for her to grab a book to read with you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Talk about Text<\/span><\/h4>\n

As you are out and about with your preschooler, point out the text you see in the environment.\u00a0 Read signs or packages to your preschooler.\u00a0 He will soon be recognizing familiar words he sees around him and reading those to you.\u00a0 You can also talk about text at home with your preschooler.\u00a0 For example, you can read portions of a recipe to your preschooler or you may have sweet sayings hanging on the wall to read to your little one.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rhyme with Your Preschooler<\/span><\/h4>\n

Rhyming is an early literacy skill which will help your preschooler be a better reader later.\u00a0 Play games where you say a word and your preschooler tells you a rhyming word or vice versa.\u00a0 Singing rhyming songs or nursery rhymes are also a great way to practice this skill.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Play with Sounds and Words<\/span><\/h4>\n

Another early literacy skill is letter sound connections.\u00a0 This is when your preschooler is able to connect the sound a letter makes to the letter.\u00a0 You can strengthen this skill by asking what letter words begin with or asking your preschooler to provide you a word that begins with a certain letter.\u00a0 For example, you may ask your preschooler what letter c-c-c-c-at starts with or to tell you a word that begins with c.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
