Teaching Preschoolers Early Money Skills at Kids 'R' Kids of Waterford Lakes, Preschool. Childcare, daycareIt can be difficult in life to nail down the best ages to teach your preschooler about specific topics.

Teaching money skills is one of those topics. How much detail to get into? What specific parts to cover? It can be stressful to know where to start. Here are some basic things to keep in mind when teaching your preschooler early money skills.

Use hands-on activities to teach your preschooler any desired type of money skill.

Make a play store around your house. You and your child can put on price tags on the different items. Your child can then “buy” items from you (and vice versa). You and your child can take turns working a toy cash register (like the “Learning Resources Pretend and Play Calculator and Cash Register” or the “Learning Resources Money Jar”). Choose which money skills you want to cover and then present the skills in such a playful way that your preschooler does not even realize that learning is happening.

Go to a real store and apply the money skills learned from play.

Whether you desire your child to practice the skill of handing money to the worker or only buying what your child has the money for, your child can practice the desired money skill at a dollar store, thrift store, garage sale, etc. If possible, go to the store when it is not rush hour so that there is not so much hustle and bustle that could stress out you or your child during the process.

Teach the difference between needs and wants.

Even if your preschooler is not yet ready for certain money skills, teaching the difference between needs and wants can help your child learn that it is not wise to spend money on just anything.

It will take years (and years) for your preschooler to grasp all the necessary money skills. The key now is to keep money skills fun and lighthearted so that further skills can be built upon down the road.
