A new sibling means new adventures.

It also means new challenges. With a little early preparation, you can prepare your preschooler for a life-long relationship.

As much as is practical, involve the preschooler in the process.

Show him pictures of the baby. You could have him sing to the baby and even be around when books are being read to the baby, in utero. Be careful to not tell him he is getting a new playmate, as he will be very disappointed when a noisy and sleepy baby comes home from the hospital.

Review your preschooler’s baby days.

What child doesn’t enjoy looking at their baby pictures or watching home videos starting them? By looking through old baby pictures or watching videos, you can help your preschooler see what it was like when he was the new member of the family. It might also help the experience be fresh in his mind, helping him to know some of what to expect.

There are a variety of books that cover the topic of a new sibling.

Some discuss resentment that can help show your preschooler she isn’t alone in how she feels. Others discuss the joy and fun a new sibling brings. These can aid in her looking forward to embracing her role as the Big Sister.

Be cautious on what you say and how you say it.

You do not want to unintentionally blame the new sibling for the changes coming or even for being unable to do previously fun activities. Try to find words to communicate without negatively talking about the new sibling.

Spending time alone with your preschooler may not be easy early on, but when possible remember to take time to specifically spend with him.

Whether it is making sure he is read to every night or actually leaving the house to get ice cream, it is important to intentionally invest time in your preschooler. When he feels loved and confident in his role, it will allow him to be more accepting of a new sibling.

A new sibling brings new joy and new challenges.

Sometimes the added responsibilities appear daunting. However, with some planning and intentional involvement, the early days with a new sibling can set the stage for a long lasting relationship.
