Helping Preschoolers Understand Veterans Day

Helping Preschoolers Understand Veterans Day at Kids 'R' Kids Waterford Lakes, preschool, daycare, childcare

There is so much excitement between Halloween and Thanksgiving that it means Veterans Day often goes unnoticed. However, it is important to teach preschoolers the significance of this day. So, here are a few ways to help preschoolers understand Veterans Day.

Notes

The month of November reminds us to be thankful. This free printable can help your preschooler learn about the different branches of the military and create a thank you page for a veteran. Operation Gratitude’s Halloween Candy Give-Back Program allows your preschooler to donate leftover Halloween candy to troops who are stationed overseas. Check out this link for more information and other ways to donate.

Books

Reading is always a great way to explain things to preschoolers. You can check out these books from your local library or find a read aloud version on YouTube to help your child learn more about Veterans Day.

  • Hero Dad and Hero Mom by Melinda Hardin
  • The Poppy Lady by Moina belle Michael
  • Veterans: Heroes in our Neighborhood by Valerie Pfundstein
  • Night Catch by Brenda Ehrmantraut
  • Proud as a Peacock, Brave as a Lion by Jane Barclay

Parades

Check your local community or school calendar for a Veterans Day parade your family could attend. The ideas of wars and soldiers may be difficult for a preschooler to understand. Seeing the different service members, hearing the music, and the other sights and sounds will help make abstract concepts more concrete for your child. Instead of just watching the parade, participate by making posters or signs to show your appreciation for the veterans there.

Poppies

Other countries celebrate Remembrance Day which is similar to our Veterans Day. The poppy flower is a symbol for both of these days. You could plant some poppies together, purchase poppies from the American Legion Auxiliary, or make a torn paper craft. Having something physical to look at will also help keep the conversation going in your home, and having these little connections will help your preschool understand the significance of Veterans Day.
