Homemade Instruments for Preschoolers

Homemade Instruments for Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Waterford Lakes, preschool, daycare, childcare

Preschoolers often enjoy making music, but instruments can be a costly investment. Instead of purchasing instruments, why not make your own? From easy to very detailed, there are a variety of instruments that can be made at home.

Guitar

To make a homemade guitar, you will need a variety of rubber bands and a small but strong cardboard box. If your box has a top, remove the top. Then stretch rubber bands around the box. Rubber bands of different widths will create different tones and sounds.

Cymbals

Cymbals are easy to make and require only two common household materials: string and two old CDs. Thread a piece of string through the hole of one CDl. The string needs to be long enough to be snug around the CD and three or four fingers of your preschooler. Tie it off and repeat with the second CD. If your preschooler would like noisier cymbals, she can easily use two pan lids and clang them together.

Harmonica

A homemade harmonica can be made with two wide popsicle sticks, two rubber bands, a strip of paper the same size as the popsicle stick, and two toothpicks the width of the popsicle stick. Sandwich the paper strip between the two popsicle sticks. Next, cover one end with a rubber band and place a toothpick inside the rubber band. Repeat for the other end. For best results, place one toothpick on top of the paper and the other under the paper.

Maracas

Homemade maracas can be made using two plastic spoons, rice, plastic Easter eggs, and colorful Washi tape. Start by pouring rice into empty, plastic Easter eggs. Then close the eggs and place one egg between two spoons. Wrap the spoons and egg with Washi tape making sure all is secure. Finally, add Washi tape around the bottom of the spoon handles. These cute maracas should be fun for any preschooler to shake.

These instruments are simple to make and only require easy to find materials. Nevertheless, they can bring hours of enjoyment. See where your creativity can take you and have fun building an orchestra for your preschooler!
