The word math can bring up anxiety for some parents causing them to avoid math activities. However, math with preschoolers is simple and fun; not to mention extremely important!
How Many
Create corrals for your preschooler’s small animal toys or beds for the baby dolls. Put a number over each corral or bed. Your preschooler will then add however many animals or dolls to the appropriate space. As your little one works through this activity, talk about the numbers and allow him or her to trace the number with their finger.
Muffin Tin Counting
Cut out circles that fit inside the muffin tins and write numbers on them before putting them into the muffin tin. Provide your preschooler with enough items to place items in each hole of the pan. Your little one will then count items into the correct space.
Counting Pancakes
Cut a series of circles out of an old cardboard box and write numbers on each one. There should be a set of circles for each number that is the same quantity of that number (i.e. four circles with the number four, five circles with the number five). Give your child a spatula and a few plates and let them have fun counting and stacking pancakes!
Numerical Order
For this activity, you will need a deck of cards containing numbers one through ten. Shuffle the cards and ask your preschooler to place them in numerical order. Your little one can also match the number cards to form stacks after putting their cards in order.
Board Games
Many popular board games include rolling a game die and counting the number of spaces to move. This is a great way to incorporate one to one correspondence, counting, and social skills without your little one even realizing they are doing math!
