This is a significant day worth explaining to preschoolers. Here are a few ways to help preschoolers learn to appreciate veterans and understand what Veterans Day means.

Thank a Veteran

November is a month when we focus on thankfulness. This free printable can help your preschooler learn about the different branches of the military and create a thank you page for a veteran. You could also draw pictures or write notes to veterans. Then you could take them to a local VA hospital or retirement home. Operation Gratitude’s Operation Candy Give-Back Program allows your preschooler to donate candy (Do you have any Halloween Candy lying around still?) to troops who are serving overseas. Check out this link for more information.

Read a Book

There are many great children’s books to help your child learn about Veterans Day. Here are a few that you can check out from your local library or find a read aloud on YouTube.

Hero Dad and Hero Mom by Melinda Hardin

The Poppy Lady by Moina belle Michael

Veterans: Heroes in our Neighborhood by Valerie Pfundstein

Night Catch by Brenda Ehrmantraut

Proud as a Peacock, Brave as a Lion by Jane Barclay

Attend a Parade

Attend a local Veterans Day parade in your area. The ideas of wars and soldiers may be difficult for a preschooler to understand. Seeing the different service members, hearing the music, and the other sights and sounds will help make abstract concepts more concrete for your little one. You and your preschooler could make posters or signs to show your appreciation for the veterans there.

Remember Together

Other parts of the world celebrate a similar day called Remembrance Day and the poppy flower is a symbol of this day. Making connections will help your child have a better understanding. You could plant some poppies together, purchase poppies from the American Legion Auxiliary, or make a torn paper craft. Having something physical to look at will also help keep the conversation going in your home.

If you enjoyed this blog, please take a look at our school’s blog page.
