{"id":96000000260,"date":"2021-07-27T14:41:57","date_gmt":"2021-07-27T14:41:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kidsrkids.com\/tomball\/?p=96000000260"},"modified":"2021-07-27T14:41:57","modified_gmt":"2021-07-27T14:41:57","slug":"working-through-separation-anxiety-for-new-preschoolers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kidsrkids.com\/tomball\/2021\/07\/27\/working-through-separation-anxiety-for-new-preschoolers\/","title":{"rendered":"Working Through Separation Anxiety for New Preschoolers"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-image wp-image--no-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-96000000261 \" src=\"https:\/\/kidsrkids.com\/tomball\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/96\/2021\/07\/shutterstock_341582636.jpg\" alt=\"Working Through Separation Anxiety for New Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Tomball, preschool, daycare, childcare\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/figure><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Separation anxiety is normal and can be alleviated with some routine and reassurance.\u00a0 Below are a few tips on how to help your preschooler through separation anxiety.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prepare<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A day or two before the start of school, make a visit to the preschool with your child and tour the facilities.\u00a0 Allow your child to play while you speak with the teacher.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Discuss a special good-bye routine with your preschooler.\u00a0 This will be a routine you do everytime you tell your preschooler good-bye before you are to be apart for a period of time.\u00a0 A couple examples include a secret handshake, a silly saying (e.g. smell ya later), or a special hug and kiss routine (e.g. two big squeezes and rub noses).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Practice being apart prior to the start of school.\u00a0 Start with small amounts of time and build up to a full day apart while your child visits a friend or family member.\u00a0 Practice your special good-bye routine before separating for your time apart.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Transition Object<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Help your preschooler choose a small item (e.g. small stuffed animal, a picture of you) which calms him down and reminds him of you.\u00a0 Talk to your preschooler about how the item can be used and that it should remain in his backpack, but he can visit it when needed.\u00a0 You want this item to be an as-needed comfort, instead of an object he carries all day.\u00a0 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Kissing Hand<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by Audrey Penn is a great book to read the night prior to starting preschool.\u00a0 You can draw a small heart on your preschooler\u2019s hand to remind him of you the next morning.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Drop-off<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is important to stay upbeat at drop-off.\u00a0 Remind your preschooler you love her and will be back at a specific time.\u00a0 Do your special good-bye and leave.\u00a0 It will rip your heart out walking away while your preschooler is pleading with you to stay, but prolonging the good-bye only makes it harder for her.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Consistency<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Consistency is a huge deal for preschoolers.\u00a0 Be consistent in your morning routines, take your preschooler to school, and be consistent in your pickup routines.\u00a0 It is extremely important to be on time for pickup so your preschooler doesn\u2019t build further anxiety about being apart.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you enjoyed this blog, please take a look at our school\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kidsrkids.com\/tomball\/blog\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> blog page<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
