Instead of purchasing instruments, why not make your own? From easy to very detailed, there are a variety of instruments that can be made at home.

Drums

For a DIY drum, you will need seven empty Pringles cans, duct tape, and drum sticks. Make a circle with six cans. The remaining can is placed on the inside of the circle. The cans are then taped together using the duct tape. After the cans are secured, a strap needs to be made by folding the duct tape in half. The length of the strap needs to be long enough to comfortably go from the belly of the preschooler, up around the neck, and down the other side of the belly. Attach the strap to the drum, and you are finished!

Cymbals

Cymbals are easy to make and require only two common household materials: string and two old CDs. Thread a piece of string through the hole of one CD. The string needs to be long enough to be snug around the cd and three or four fingers of your preschooler. Tie it off and repeat with the second CD.

Pan Flute

A pan flute can be made with three simple steps and from eight large straws, tape, and scissors. First, organize the straws in a line. Second, cut them at different lengths creating a simple diagonal line. Third, tape the straws together. For even more fun, select straws of various colors.

Tambourine

Many preschoolers enjoy playing a tambourine. This tambourine is one that the preschooler can help decorate prior to the construction. You will need two strong paper plates, ribbon, crayons, stickers, scissors, jingle bells, and a hole punch. Allow your preschooler to decorate the bottoms of two plates using crayons and stickers. Next, put the tops of the plates facing each other. Then place holes around the edge roughly every two inches. String two jingle bells through each hole with ribbon. Your preschooler is now the owner of her own masterpiece.

With just a little bit of time and a few items common in many homes, you can build a full band of instruments for your preschooler. These instruments can provide hours of imagination and entertainment for you and him. Happy building!

If you enjoyed this blog, please take a look at our school’s blog page.
