Keep reading for how you and your little scientist can use household ingredients to pour a rainbow into any old jar!

For this experiment, you will need the following materials:

Clear jar

Honey

Light corn syrup

Blue dish soap

Olive oil

Rubbing alcohol

Water

Food coloring

Dropper

Before starting the experiment, explain to your child the concept of density so they understand what is about to happen. Tell your child everything is made up of molecules; some liquids in the experiment have lots of molecules and others have only a few. The ones with more molecules are heavier and will stay towards the bottom.

Start your experiment by having your preschooler pour the honey into the jar, being careful not to let it touch the sides. Next, use food coloring to turn the corn syrup purple before pouring in on top of the honey, again being careful not to let it touch the sides. Follow with dish soap, water colored green with food coloring, and a thick layer of olive oil. Finally, use the red food coloring to color the rubbing alcohol, before using a dropper to drop the alcohol along the side of the jar.

You want to be careful not to break through the layer of oil while you do this.

Once you have added the rubbing alcohol, your experiment is done! To admire it, hold it up to the light or move it to a windowsill very carefully without shaking it up.

Try this impressive science experiment the next time you have a free afternoon with your preschooler, we promise you will love how easy it is, and they will love the cool end product!

If you enjoyed these tips, you’ll want to check out our previous blog on Halloween Parties for Preschoolers!

Want to learn more about Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Tomball located in Tomball, Texas?
