This month is self-improvement month, making September the perfect time to teach your preschooler about making goals! Setting goals with your child early in their life sets a good foundation and gives them some responsibility.<\/p>\n

Split goals into three categories for your child: character, academic, and physical. This will simplify the process, but feel free to change the categories to fit your child\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n

  1. For character goals, talk to your child about character qualities and see if they have any they want to improve. Examples of character goals could be first-time obedience, telling the truth even though they might get in trouble, or quickly volunteering to help others.<\/li>\n
  2. Academic goals may be easier for your child to come up with than character goals! Let your child tell you what they want to learn this school year. Ideas include memorizing their address and phone number, figuring out how to spell their full name, or learning about dinosaurs. If your child\u2019s preschool has goals for them, such as letter identification, you can add that to the list, as well.<\/li>\n
  3. The last category is physical goals. These can be any action you or your child want to improve on. Some ideas we love are learning how to tie shoes, buckling up in the car on their own, or riding a bike without training wheels. You could even include chores in this category such as sorting laundry or making their bed in the morning.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    For each category, try to help your child come up with two to three goals. Once you have picked goals, come up with action items, or ways your child will reach their goal. If your child\u2019s goal is to learn to tie their shoes, their action item would be practicing it three times per week.<\/p>\n

    Encourage your child to do their action items so they can reach their goals. When they do reach one, celebrate with them! After all the goals are achieved, help your child formulate more. While preschool may seem young for setting goals, your preschooler will begin to see the importance and be set up for future success.<\/p>\n
