Set up Your Calendar for Success as Your Preschooler Goes Back to School

Set up Your Calendar for Success as Your Preschooler Goes Back to School at Kids 'R' Kids the Woodlands, preschool, daycare, childcare

Ready or not, here it comes! The busy fall schedule is fast approaching. As you and your preschooler start planning for busier schedules, there are a few ways to help set up your preschooler for a successful start. Here are a few ideas for how to set up your calendar for success as your preschooler starts new activities.

Set Up Calendar Opportunities

If you have a desk or wall calendar, this may be your new “best friend” to help your preschooler get the hang of the upcoming schedule changes. You can have your child put a sticker on the first day that fall ballet or fall swimming starts, for example. Leading up to those start days, you and your preschooler can count how many days are left before their specific event starts.

Also, you can have your preschooler put stickers on whatever types of days could help your child understand what is upcoming. For example, you can show your preschooler on the calendar what day your child will have to start an earlier dinner routine. If you have not done necessary shopping for your upcoming fall events, your child can color those calendar spots with their favorite color.

Have “Impromptu” Discussions

A week before any new fall activity starts, use unforced opportunities to let your preschooler know what will soon be taking place during different parts of the day. For example, during evening snack time, you could tell your preschooler something like, “Next week at this time, we will be returning from your brother’s baseball practice.”

Preschooler Participation

No matter what plan you make for new activity preparations, be sure to include your preschooler in the process in some way. Preschooler involvement is helpful so that your child will feel more prepared for a substantial change.

Soon enough, your preschooler will get the hang of this new schedule. With a few and simple preparations, your child can be on the front end of the schedule transitions.
