Stopping to appreciate the environment around you can both enrich your appreciation for nature and help your child learn about the annual cycle of seasons in a celebratory fashion. You and your child will always have a new season to look forward to. Below are a few ideas to stoke the fires of your imagination!

Have a Picnic

Since fall typically brings cooler weather, those who live in warm climates will appreciate the ability to go outside without breaking into a sweat. So take advantage of it! Pack up some lunch and head to the park for a picnic. Be sure to bring a blanket to sit on and some games to play.

Go on a Nature Hike

Sure, you could do this during any season, but there’s nothing quite like strolling through a nature trail as it transitions from a lush green to a multitude of red, orange, and yellow tones. And don’t be afraid to stop and smell the roses, or any flower for that matter!

Go Apple Picking and Make a Sweet Snack

It’s apple season! Head to a local farm and pick some apples. You can use them to make pies, applesauce, or just eat them as a snack. You and your child will be pleasantly surprised at the dynamic flavor that only freshly-picked fruits can offer. Plus, you can use the opportunity to show your child where fruits and vegetables come from. They might just be surprised that fruit doesn’t spontaneously appear in the supermarket.

Go Shopping for Plants, Then Plant Them

Letting your child choose their very own plant at a garden center is a fun and inexpensive way to introduce the concept of caretaking to a child. They’ll have so much fun picking out and naming their favorite plant, and you can pick one out as well to make a “plant family” in your garden. There are a few reasons why it is better to plant in the fall. The weather is usually cooler, which means the plants will experience less stress. The soil is also typically more moist in the fall, which is ideal for plant growth. Additionally, fall planting allows the plants to become established before the heat of summer returns.

Make a Scarecrow

Get some old clothes and stuff them with straw. Create a face with a paper plate, and a skeleton out of yardsticks. Place your scarecrow in the yard and watch the birds fly away!

Go on a Hayride

Many farms offer hayrides in the fall. This is a great way to see the fall foliage and get in the autumn spirit.

Make S’mores

Everyone knows that s’mores taste better in the fall! Take a night to light up that fireplace, pit, or grill that you never use and enjoy the greatest marshmallow snack of all time. If you don’t have a fire, or just have safety concerns, you can also make s’mores in the microwave by stacking the ingredients and heating for 10-15 seconds.

Bonus: Go pumpkin picking! Head to a pumpkin patch and pick out the perfect pumpkin. You can use it to carve a jack-o-lantern or make a pumpkin pie. There is a reason to celebrate every season, so give your preschooler a head start in this wholesome tradition by showing them the best fall of their lives (so far)!

If you enjoyed this blog, please take a look at our school’s blog page.
