The new school year is quickly approaching! Although this time of year is filled with excitement, it can also be filled with anxiety for parents and preschoolers. Below are a few tips on starting the school year on the right foot!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Talk about It<\/span><\/h4>\n

Talk to your preschooler about the start of a new school year and all the exciting possibilities it brings. Read books about starting school or returning to school with your preschooler. Encourage them to begin a list of questions they may have for their teacher, or about the process of school in general. By having their questions answered, they will feel a lot more at ease, which will help the school year begin on the right foot!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Meet the Teacher and Staff<\/span><\/h4>\n

Take time to meet your preschooler\u2019s teacher and any other staff they may interact with during the school day. Allow your preschooler to meet these new important people in their life, and ask any questions they may have. Tour the school with your preschooler and show them where they will eat lunch, keep their belongings, use the restroom, and have recess. They will feel more comfortable seeing these locations for the first time with a parent or loved one by their side.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Familiarize Yourself<\/span><\/h4>\n

Familiarize yourself with the school policies and rules. Make note of any events or dates the school is closed to make planning easier and avoid the panic of last minute surprises. Create a plan for drop-off and pick-up in accordance with the school\u2019s procedures and share this plan with your preschooler. They will feel less anxious knowing how and who will be involved in dropping them off and picking them up from school.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Routine<\/span><\/h4>\n

A routine is important for children. If your preschooler does not have a set bedtime and waking routine, now is a great time to start one. Routines help children feel safe by letting them know what to expect. Routines also help signal to your preschooler\u2019s brain when it is time to relax and prepare for a restful night of sleep. A morning routine will help mornings go more smoothly, and help start each day off on the right foot for your preschooler. It can also be helpful to create a routine of what to do when your preschooler returns home from school (i.e. where to put her backpack and lunchbox) to help keep items organized and ready to go the next school day.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
