This February is a perfect opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans throughout American history (and beyond). Learning about the rich history of these African Americans is something that even preschoolers can learn to appreciate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are books and movies that can be used during Black History Month, in both the childcare setting and at home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Carter Reads the Newspaper<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n

In this book, by Deborah Hopkinson, your preschooler will see how Carter Woodson, the son of former slaves, used his love for reading to then write about the history of important African Americans.<\/span><\/p>\n

YOU SHOULD MEET Jesse Owens<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n

In this book from the Ready to Read series, Laurie Calkhoven writes about Jesse Owens, an African American gold medalist in the 1936 Olympics. Jesse Owens stood against racism and made a difference for his generation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

28 DAYS: MOMENTS IN BLACK HISTORY THAT CHANGED THE WORLD<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n

Charles R. Smith, wrote this book to cover important African American accomplishments, from both the past and present. There are 28 brief and stand-alone stories. You can cover one each day with your child in February. This was proactively designed by the author to use in Black History Month.<\/span><\/p>\n

MARCH ON! The Day My Brother Martin Changed the World\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n

From Scholastic, this is a \u2018read-along\u2019 DVD. With multiple stories included on the DVD, your preschooler can learn about four children\u2019s books regarding black history. It is recommended for ages 4 and up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Henry\u2019s Freedom Box: A True Story from the Underground Railroad<\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n

In this Amazon\u2019s <\/span>Teacher Pick<\/span><\/i>, written by Ellen Levine and Kadir Nelson, your child can learn about the life of Henry Brown and how he literally mailed himself to a life of freedom!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Journey of Henry Box Brown<\/span><\/i>, Told by Alfre Woodard<\/span><\/h4>\n

Your preschooler can enjoy this short movie that goes right along with the Henry Brown story listed above. It is recommended for ages five and older.<\/span><\/p>\n

Your public library should have a variety of books that will be great resources for Black History Month. This is a good time in history to teach the next generation that everyone is equally important.<\/span><\/p>\n
