It\u2019s never too early to <\/span>instill an attitude of gratitude in little ones<\/span><\/a>, and there\u2019s no better time than Thanksgiving to do it! Getting past the turkey and the pumpkin pie can be hard, so here are some tips for teaching your preschooler about the true reason we celebrate this special day.<\/span><\/p>\n

The First Thanksgiving<\/span><\/h3>\n

In 1621, the Pilgrims and Native Americans came together to celebrate their harvest. They ate fish, local berries, and venison and enjoyed their bounty over a period of three days. Thanksgiving became a national holiday in 1863 and is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November each year!<\/span><\/p>\n

Festive Activities<\/span><\/h3>\n

Make the meaning of Thanksgiving more interactive for your preschooler with these family-friendly ideas:<\/span><\/p>\n

Have a scavenger hunt!<\/span><\/h4>\n

Print out pictures of common foods that the Pilgrims and Native Americans may have eaten at the first Thanksgiving, and hide them around your house. Guide your preschooler throughout the house and emphasize how the Pilgrims and Native Americans grew and gathered their food. After your little one has found all the food items, have a conversation with them about being grateful for the food and nourishment they receive.<\/span><\/p>\n

Donate food to a shelter!<\/span><\/h4>\n

A fun way to give back is to donate food to a local food bank or shelter in your area. Host a neighborhood canned food drive or cook duplicates of some of your favorite Thanksgiving dishes with your preschooler and take them to a local shelter on Thanksgiving Day.<\/span><\/p>\n
