Believe it or not, a little safe spookiness can actually build confidence in preschoolers! When young children experience “gentle scares” through stories, they learn that it’s normal to feel a little afraid—and that they can overcome those feelings. Storytelling provides a safe, controlled way for preschoolers to experience and process emotions like fear, bravery, and excitement.

When preschoolers listen to slightly spooky stories, they practice managing emotions, predicting outcomes, and distinguishing between real and imaginary events. They build critical thinking by asking, “Could that really happen?” and they strengthen memory skills by recalling story sequences. Preschoolers also feel empowered when they can laugh at a silly ghost or cheer for a brave character, reinforcing their own growing sense of resilience.

Listening to spooky stories together also strengthens language skills. Preschoolers learn new words, practice listening carefully, and engage in conversations about emotions—all critical parts of early childhood development.

Families can support preschoolers by keeping storytime cozy and comforting. Snuggle under a blanket, read by flashlight, or create a “magic” word (like “pumpkin pie!”) that preschoolers can say if they need a break from the story. Always encourage questions and discussions during and after reading to help preschoolers process the story in a safe, supportive way.
