Making Time Change Easier for Your Preschooler

Making Time Change Easier for Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids Stafford, preschool, daycare, childcare

Time change can be a difficult adjustment for preschoolers and a dreaded event for parents. It may feel like just when you’ve finally established a good bedtime routine you spring or fall right out of it. Try out these tips to help ease the transition for your preschooler.

Make adjustments early

Prepare for time change by putting your preschooler to bed a little later (in fall) or earlier (in spring). Using 15-minute increments, you can have your preschooler ready for time change in four nights. The first night would be a 15 minute adjustment from their regular bedtime, the second night 30 minutes, the third night would be 45 minutes, ending with the fourth night at the full hour. This is easier than a full hour change all at once. Consider changing waking up times as well.

Maintain Routine

Sticking with routine will help preschoolers adjust to time change. By continuing bedtime routines, your preschooler’s body will recognize bedtime is coming allowing her to relax and fall asleep. Remember to also maintain daytime routines and incorporate plenty of exercise to aid in wearing your preschooler out.

Monitor light

Light helps manage our circadian rhythms. It tells our bodies when to wake and when to sleep. Turning down lights and turning off electronics 30 minutes before bed will help a preschooler’s adjustment. Blackout curtains may be needed to help control light. Adding in natural light, if possible, in the morning will cue him that it is time to wake up. If natural light is not possible, turn on multiple lights within the house to make it bright.

Manage expectations

Daylight Savings can be very difficult on a preschooler. If your preschooler transitions easily, that is wonderful! However, if she struggles, the best thing you can do is be patient and offer sympathy. If you are able to stay calm and understanding, you will be able to help make the transition smoother and quicker.

Twice a year your preschooler’s routine will require an adjustment. Although time change may still present some challenges, a few gentle calibrations can ease the transition. By sticking with a plan your preschooler can be resituated in no time.
