Preschoolers and Summer Safety Tips

Preschoolers and Summer Safety Tips

Summer is here!! And with it comes the heat! Summer is full of fun activities, but our main priority is to keep our preschoolers safe. Here are some safety tips and reminders to ensure summer is both fun and safe!

Protect Against the Sun

The sun’s strong UV rays can even break through on cloudy days. Sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher will protect your children if they reapply often, especially when getting wet. The best protection against the sun, however, is covering your skin! Hats and long sleeve shirts will do wonders to prevent sunburn. Finally, don’t forget about their eyes! Sunglasses will protect their eyes from those strong UV rays.

Stay Cool

To prevent dehydration and overheating while playing outside, have your child drink plenty of liquids, especially water! The hottest hours of the day are from 10am to 4pm, so try to find shade to play in during this time. Finally, if your child is going to be outside for a long time, help them cool off by going inside every now and then.

Beware of Water

Children should never be alone near water, even if they have had swimming lessons! If your child isn’t a strong swimmer, floaties are a great option for them to join in on the fun. Goggles will help protect your child’s eyes, as well! One of the most important safety rules is to never run near water because it could be slippery!

Avoid Bug Bites

Itchy bug bites are the worst! Bug spray is an easy way to keep mosquitoes and other bugs away. If your child doesn’t like the smell of traditional bug spray, try a natural kind! We have found that kids prefer it because it won’t sting their eyes or cuts (Peppermint oil/peppermint plants are a great natural repellent). If you are spending time in your backyard, consider picking up some citronella candles. They smell great and keep mosquitoes at bay!

It is important to remind children of these summer safety tips to make sure they have the most fun possible! Using these tips will help ensure a safe and happy summer!
