Teaching Your Preschooler to be a Team Player

Teaching Your Preschooler to be a Team Player

There’s no I in team

Your preschooler’s teacher has probably said this many times to your kiddo. It’s important to teach your children the value of teamwork from a young age. You want what’s best for your child and teaching them how to be a team player now can impact their character dramatically in the future.

Sharing is Caring

Sharing doesn’t come naturally to little ones – it’s taught. Plan playdates with your kiddos and their best friends to teach them the importance of sharing. Some kids tend to get possessive with their newest toys and don’t want their friends to even touch their Elmo plush. Teach your child to take the time to share their favorite toys with their friends! This may be a challenge at first, so try suggesting that your kiddos play a game such as “house” that requires them to work as a family and team!

Win or Lose

A great way to teach your preschooler about being a team player is showing them that it is okay to win and lose. Play board games with your child and teach them that sometimes they’re not always going to win. You don’t want your little one to be the kid at the birthday party who throws a temper tantrum when they lose at Monopoly or a video game. This is also an awesome opportunity to teach your child to celebrate their friends’ accomplishments, instead of being jealous.

Team Activities

Kids love to play, and therefore tend to learn the best from play. Have your child participate in an activity that requires many people. Whether it’s for a class or a family activity, this can help bring up conversation that goes along the lines of: “I’m so glad that we could figure that out together!”. When they are beginning an activity, encourage them to ask a friend if they are confused or need help. Not only are they learning to take matters into their own hands and asking peers for help, but they are also learning that they are able to help others.

Teaching preschoolers how to be a team player can be accomplished through the little things. Sometimes the littlest of gestures make the biggest impact!
