Halloween Costume Ideas for Your Preschooler

Halloween costume ideas for your preschooler

Between pumpkin spice lattes, overly fluffy scarves and flannel, there’s a lot to be excited about in October. Don’t let choosing your preschooler’s Halloween costume bring you down! If you’re ready to figure out what outfit will make your child happiest on the big day (or need a quick idea for a last-minute ensemble) check out these three ideas for how to nail the costume without the stress:

Check online

There’s a wealth of ideas and possibilities when you search online for costumes. This doesn’t just mean a quick Amazon search either. Crack those knuckles and disappear down everyone’s favorite rabbit hole: Pinterest. People have created entire pin boards not only to costumes they’ve created for their own kids (as well as the “how-to” to create those costumes on a budget), but also boards for Halloween costume inspiration. Another option is to jump onto Instagram and search the hashtags. Combing #halloween, #kidshalloween, #halloweencostumes or any other combination of hashtags will literally bring you millions of images of Insta-piration!

Work with what you’ve got

If you’ve got the money to run and grab this year’s trending kids’ costume off the rack, more power to you. But if you’ve got the time to improvise and make your own thing, it will result in a truly unique and personal costume for your preschooler. Remember that there’s a lot of inspiration to be had by just bringing your child to your local thrift store and letting their imagination do the talking. Otherwise, look into the possibility of purchasing a cheap sewing pattern online or from your local craft store. Also, remember that buying that cheap Halloween makeup at the department store gives you a versatile tool for creating a totally unique (albeit temporary) look for your child’s Halloween.

Listen to your child

When it all boils down to it, your greatest source of inspiration for your child’s costume will always be…your child. Talk to them early in the month about what they want to be for Halloween, and if this is one of their first times to really dress up for themselves, help guide them through the process. If you’re working on a time crunch or their ideas are a little too extreme, help bring them around to a more conventional solution. This is, after all, their Halloween—let’s make sure it’s a memorable one!
