In September we celebrate World Gratitude Day. We all want to raise children who are courteous, generous, and grateful. What better way to reinforce these attitudes than by teaching preschoolers, who are often focused on their own way, their turn, and their individual needs, to practice gratitude this month! Here are a few ways to help your preschoolers practice gratitude every day:
What are you grateful for?
At the end of the day, at dinner together with the whole family, or while getting ready for bed, ask your preschooler to share what they are grateful for. Demonstrate this activity for them by sharing your own thoughts. Each day of the week change the topic: One night discuss people you are grateful for, then things you are grateful for, then kindnesses you are grateful for, or blessings you are grateful for. Mix it up!
Make treats and write thank you notes.
Make cookies or treats to deliver to your neighborhood sanitation workers, post man, local police station or fire station, and make thank you notes to deliver with the treats!
Tell people thank you.
Make it a daily practice to share your gratitude with everyday encounters at the grocery store, coffee line, school, or at church. Remind your preschooler to thank the people who help them and teach them. Help them share specifically what action they are grateful for, “Thank you for teaching me today!”
Draw pictures.
After school, spend time with your preschooler drawing people they are grateful for. Find out from your child why they are grateful for that person and write it on the top of their picture. Gift their pictures to the people they draw.
You preschooler will begin to practice gratitude daily and it will become a natural behavior that will be a joy to see!
