Tips to Get Started On Your Garden Journey With Your Preschooler

Gardening with your preschooler is an incredible way to introduce them to the beauty and wonders of nature while also encouraging them to learn about where their food comes from. Not only is it a fun and educational activity, but it can also be a great way to bond with your little one! Here are some tips to get started on your garden journey:

Choose a spot for your garden

Before you start planting, choose the right spot for your garden. You’ll want a spot that gets plenty of sunlight, has good soil, and is close to a water source. If you don’t have a backyard, don’t worry – You can plant in pots or raised beds on a balcony or patio.

Decide what to plant

Once you have your spot, it’s time to decide what to plant. Consider planting vegetables or herbs that your family enjoys eating! This can be a great way to encourage your preschooler to eat their vegetables, as they will have grown them themselves! Some easy plants to start with include tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, and herbs like basil and parsley.

Involve your child in the process

Now that you have your spot and your plants picked out, it’s time to get your preschooler involved in the process! Have them help you prepare the soil, plant the seeds, and water the garden. This is a great opportunity to teach them about the different parts of a plant, how plants grow, and the importance of watering and caring for plants.

Make it fun

Make gardening a fun experience for your preschooler by incorporating games and activities! Have them decorate plant markers, create a scavenger hunt for different plants in the garden, or even have a picnic in the garden. This can make gardening a fun and exciting activity for your child.

Monitor progress and celebrate milestones

As your garden grows, make sure to monitor its progress with your child. Show them how the plants are growing and changing, and celebrate milestones like the first sprouts, the first flower, or the first harvest. This can be a great way to teach your child about the life cycle of plants and the importance of patience and perseverance.

Enjoy the fruits of your labor

Finally, enjoy the fruits (and vegetables) of your labor! Harvest your produce and use it in meals or snacks with your preschooler. This can be a great way to get them excited about eating healthy foods and appreciating the work that goes into growing their own food.

Gardening with your preschooler is a rewarding and educational activity that can teach them about nature, healthy eating, and the value of hard work! By involving them in the process and making it fun, you can create memories that will last a lifetime. So, grab your shovels and get ready to start your garden!
