Getting Your Preschooler Involved in Giving

It’s never too early to start teaching your children about the importance of giving back. As a parent, you are your child’s first and most influential teacher, so it’s important to model philanthropic behavior and instill values of giving in your preschooler. Below are ten tips to get your preschooler involved in giving:

Explain what giving is.

Before you can expect your preschooler to start giving, you need to explain to them what giving is. Explain that giving is when you help someone else, without expecting anything in return. You can use simple examples to illustrate, such as giving a friend a toy or helping a neighbor carry groceries.

Encourage them to give to others.

Once you’ve explained what giving is, start encouraging your preschooler to give to others. This could be in the form of volunteering your time, donating toys or clothes they no longer use, or simply performing acts of kindness like holding the door open for someone.

Lead by example.

If you want your preschooler to be giving, then you need to lead by example. When you make charitable donations, let your child see you do it. Attend charity events or volunteer opportunities together. Show your child that giving back is important to you, and they will follow suit.

Start a “give back” jar.

One way to get your preschooler involved in giving is to start a “give back” jar. Every time your family has some extra money, whether it’s from a birthday or holiday, put it in the jar. At the end of the year, you can donate the money to a charity of your choice. This is a great way to teach your child about saving up for a good cause.

Bake cookies for a neighbor.

Another way to get your preschooler involved in giving is to bake cookies for a neighbor. This is a great opportunity to teach your child about giving of their time and talents. Not to mention, it’s a delicious way to spread some cheer!

Committing to a lifetime of giving back doesn’t have to be complicated. By starting early and leading by example, you can teach the values of philanthropy in your preschooler – creating a foundation of true altruism that we could all benefit from.
