Why Grandparents are Important for Preschoolers

Why Grandparents are Important for Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Spring West, preschool, daycare, childcare

Your preschooler is sure to run to the door in excitement when he sees his grandparent’s car pull into the driveway.  Is he excited because they always bring candy and hugs or is there more to it?  Grandparents offer more to your preschooler’s development than you may realize.

Family Traditions

Your child’s grandparents likely have more knowledge of your family history and family traditions than anyone else.  Knowing about your family history and background can instill a sense of pride and security in your preschooler.  Your preschooler and his grandparents will enjoy bonding through participating in a family tradition.

Unconditional Love

Grandparents are often a child’s safe place.  Children know they can do and say anything and their grandparents will still love them.  Your preschooler may feel more comfortable trying new or difficult skills with a grandparent, because she knows anything she does makes grandma proud.

Perspective

Your little one can benefit from hearing a variety of perspectives.  Grandparents often see things differently than parents, since they grew up during a different time and have been through different experiences.

Experience

Have you ever been blown away by how quickly your preschooler picked up a skill or how easily she was able to navigate your cell phone?  There are tasks that your preschooler may find easy, but her grandparents may not have mastered due to changing times.  Your preschooler can increase her skills and language by teaching her grandparents tasks they find difficult that she is good at already, such as operating a cell phone.

Advice

Parenting is the most rewarding and most difficult job you will ever possess.  Although the times have changed, many aspects of parenting have not changed.  Your parents or your partner’s parents can offer a lot of insight and encouragement when you are struggling with parenting.
