Fun Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with Your Preschooler

Fun Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids Spring West, preschool, daycare, childcare

St. Patrick’s Day isn’t as big of a holiday as Christmas or Easter, but there are plenty of activities to enjoy with your preschooler and ways to teach your preschooler about the holiday.

St. Patrick

St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland.  He is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland.  Checkout some child friendly books from the library for your child to learn about St. Patrick and why we celebrate his life.  You can read more about St. Patrick by searching online encyclopedias.

Rainbows

St. Patrick’s Day often brings thoughts of leprechauns, which brings thoughts of rainbows.  This can be a great opportunity to introduce how rainbows are made to your preschooler.  If the weather is sunny and warm enough to get wet, head outside to create a rainbow with the water hose.  Stand with the sun behind you and create a mist with the hose.  Your preschooler is sure to squeal with excitement as the sun shines through the mist and reveals a rainbow!  Bright Hub explains how rainbows are made and provides a few fun activities to make a rainbow with your preschooler.  They even give an idea for a fun chalk activity to create a rainbow art piece!

Fine Motor Activities

Grab some round yellow or gold stickers, a sheet of green construction paper, and a black marker.  Draw a shamrock shape on the paper and invite your preschooler to peel the stickers off and add them to the shamrock outline.  This is a great fine motor activity and helps with hand-eye coordination.

Letter Matching

Obtain some plastic gold coins and trace their shape onto a green sheet of paper.  Write uppercase letters on the coins and lowercase letters on the circles on the paper.  Allow your child to match the uppercase to the lowercase letters.

Hide the gold coins around your house and write hints for your preschooler from the leprechaun.  Your preschooler is sure to enjoy hunting for the leprechaun’s gold and then placing the gold coins in alphabetical order!
