Problem Solving Techniques to Teach Your Preschooler

Problem Solving Techniques to Teach Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids Spring West, preschool, daycare, childcare

When you think of skills your preschooler needs you likely think of academic skills (i.e. alphabet recognition, counting, ect.).  Did you know problem solving skills are a huge benefit to your preschooler now and in the future?  Below are a few tips on helping your preschooler build problem solving skills.

Don’t Hover

Try to avoid swooping in to solve your preschooler’s problems immediately.  Instead, watch from a safe distance while she tries to solve the problem independently.  Watch for signs of frustration and offer assistance to avoid her becoming frustrated and losing confidence. Continue to avoid solving her problem, but help her brainstorm possible solutions and offer praise and encouragement.

Creative Play

A child who engages in creative or imaginative play will have more opportunities to practice problem solving than if he only engages in technology based play.  Incorporate plenty of opportunities for your preschooler to engage in activities like building with blocks, creating open ended projects, or imaginative play.

Break it Down

Help your preschooler break the problem into smaller chunks.  Talk through the problem and all the small details that make up the problem.  Help your preschooler come up with possible ways to solve each of those small details.

Teach the Process

Teach your preschooler the steps of solving a problem.  Ask your preschooler what the problem is and then identify all the pieces that make up the problem and tackle one piece of the problem at a time.  Work with your preschooler to brainstorm possible solutions.  Allow your preschooler to try out the solutions and then evaluate the problem.  If the problem isn’t solved, move on to the next solution.

Provide Social Experiences

Provide opportunities to play with other children his age.  Encourage creative and imaginative play and allow them to work together to solve any problems that arise.  Being able to solve social conflicts will help your child greatly!
