Toys Parents Should Avoid Buying for Preschoolers

We all want to make our little ones happy, but sometimes it’s easy to go overboard when it comes to spoiling your child. When shopping for your preschooler, it is essential to keep in mind that less is often more. Here are some handy tips on what kind of toys you should avoid giving a preschooler, to narrow down your decision and keep your child mentally and physically safe:

Expensive toys that will quickly break or lose their appeal.

Spending $100+ on a child’s toy may seem like a smart idea, but reality is they are prone to breaking or lose their appeal just as quickly as they appear. Spend less, enjoy your holiday season more.

Toys with small parts that can easily be lost or swallowed.

Be careful with purchasing toys that have lots of tiny pieces – they’re just waiting to be lost, or worse, swallowed. Choose simpler toys with fewer parts or pieces that are large as they are unable to create a choking hazard.

Battery-operated toys.

Toys that use batteries are not only a pain to transport, but they’re doing terrible for the environment. Avoid them if at all possible, and if you can’t, grab those rechargeable batteries! Make it your New Year’s Resolution.

Toys with sharp edges or corners.

Children actively love to test gravity, don’t help them by choosing toys with spiky edges – your little one will find them on their perilous adventures. Choose smooth and rounded toy designs instead so everyone stays happy, safe and healthy.

Non-educational toys.

Yes, dolls and action figures are exceptionally popular, but try to find a balance by adding literary, educational and emotional learning opportunities to their toy pile. Think puzzles, books, building blocks, musical instruments, etc. It’s healthy to stimulate your little one’s brain when they are learning and developing!

Giving a gift to your preschooler is a gift in itself. And with these tips in mind, you can have a little more peace when making this decision. Be intentional with your gifts this season, and enjoy the peace of mind that a safe play place for your child can provide.
