Sibling Bullying: Helping Your Little Ones Get Along

Sibling Bullying: Helping Your Little Ones Get Along

When any group of people get together for an extended period of time, there is bound to be a disagreement or two.  Among children, you should expect it! However, at some point one of your children may feel picked on. When does sibling rivalry turn into bullying?

Bullying occurs in many forms, but often manifests in constant, repetitive actions that come with harmful intent. “If a boy perceives his sister as being hurtful on purpose, over and over again, and she is older than him or more powerful than him in some way, it meets the definition of bullying.”

When rivalry escalates to bullying, it is important to insert yourself as the parent and help each of your children.  Here are some resources to help you begin to manage the process with your children:

  • Learn to recognize the patterns of bullying behavior in order to understand if your child is the victim of a sibling bully.  You’ll find tips in this article for parents navigating this complex situation.
  • Verywell Family reminds parents that young children are still learning what behaviors are acceptable and those that aren’t.  You’ll find additional steps to take when you witness specific behaviors from your children.
  • Sometimes the parental advice of “fight it out” seems like an acceptable course of action.  Children do need to learn to work together and problem solve on their own. However, this advice may not always be the best option and may escalate if not appropriately monitored.  If the “fight” goes on in bedrooms, away from parents, you may not witness the bullying.
  • Studies have found that sibling bullying is more harmful that bullying from peers at school.  This article helps explain how to stop bullying before it ever begins.

In life, just as in the family, sometimes two people just do not get along. Different personalities and interests can collide. While this is a normal thing, it is important that children learn how to live peaceably with everyone and show mutual respect for one another.
