Gross Motor Skills for Preschoolers

gross motor skills

Gross motor skills are the movements your preschool child uses for running and jumping, throwing a ball and pedaling a bike. Swimming at the pool this summer will help develop these skills for your child too!  Here are some activities to get your little ones moving and building their gross motor skills:

Walking and Balance

Lay out tape on the floor in straight lines and wavy lines that your kids can follow to walk along the floor.  Line up pillows on the floor after dinner and let your child jump from pillow to pillow to practice their balance. When you are out running errands walk with your child along the curb—first holding their hand, then let them try it on their own!

Catching and Throwing a Ball

Playing with a balloon is a great way to practice for ball throwing.  As the balloon is bouncing around and floating through the air, your preschooler can get into place to aim and catch the balloon.  And what joy a child has from bouncing a balloon! The next step is to transition to catching a ball smaller than a balloon. Have your child stand with their arms out, waiting to catch the ball.  Repeat this activity so they find the rhythm of catching the ball. When throwing the ball back, start out with short distances so the target is easy to throw to. Let them take a step back each time to see if they can throw the ball to you!

Jumping

Why do kids love to jump around so much?  Whatever the reason, it builds strength in their legs and bodies for other activities like running and bike riding.  Kids will display their dare-devil side by jumping over toys or jumping from the second step instead of the first. While it might stress you out, they are developing their gross motor skills and space perception that will serve them well as they get older.  Spend time at a trampoline park this summer so your child can build strength in their legs and also get those wiggles out!
