It can be difficult to keep little hands and minds busy, but science experiments are fun and educational ways to pass the time and provide learning opportunities for your little ones. Here are some fun hands-on activities to try at home with your preschooler.

Shaving Cream Rain Clouds

This experiment is perfect for teaching little ones about weather and rain! Fill a glass jar or vase with water, add a generous amount of shaving cream to the top of the water to form “clouds.” Use a dropper and mixed watercolor paints or food coloring to add liquid color to the shaving cream. As the color saturates the “clouds,” the color will form “rain” in the water.

Baking Soda Balloons

This simple chemistry experiment only requires balloons, baking soda, and white vinegar. Add a few tablespoons of baking soda to a balloon (blow it up a little first to get the baking soda in easily, a funnel may help), and then stretch the balloon over a bottle filled halfway with vinegar. Watch the balloons inflate as the baking soda and vinegar mix!

Melting Ice Rainbows

Using water, salt, and food coloring, create beautiful melted ice sculptures while showing your preschooler how salt helps melt ice at cooler temperatures. Freeze water in different sized containers overnight. Add salt to the tops of the ice to create ravines and crevices, and drop food coloring onto the ice to create beautiful stained-glass creations.

Slime!

What preschooler doesn’t love playing with slime? All you need to make slime is Elmer’s glue, saline solution (contact solution works great), and baking soda to create slime that will entertain your child for hours. Use glitter glue for less mess but more sparkle!

Want to learn more about Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Round Rock located in Round Rock, Texas?
