At first, it may not feel like genuine appreciation, but you can teach your preschooler how to be thankful by modeling how it is done. Experiment with a few of these ideas to find what works best for your family.

Create a Gratitude Project

A gratitude project can create a visual representation and serve as a reminder for everyone in the family. Create a bulletin board where everyone in the family adds something they are thankful for. Whether you use a whiteboard and markers, sticky notes, or a cork board with push pins, make it a regular part of your day to stop and express gratitude. If you do not have a lot of space, you can use a jar with slips of paper. Have each family member write or draw something they are thankful for, and then at the end of each month, empty the jar and read the slips. It will serve as a great reminder that there is much to be thankful for!

Start a Thankfulness Routine

Set aside time each week to model thankfulness. Often, with the busyness of life, we forget to set aside time to be thankful. Choose one (or more) of the options below, and then set a “Thankfulness Routine” weekly alarm on your phone. When the alarm goes off, stop what you are doing and express your gratitude.

One day a week when the whole family is together at dinner, take turns sharing one thing each person is thankful for.

Every Sunday night before bed, choose one person you plan to show gratitude to that week and describe how you will express it to them.

On the car ride to work or school, each person thanks the other people in the car for one thing they have done for them.

Every Saturday morning, each person will write or draw a thank you note or make something for someone in order to show their appreciation for that person.

If you enjoyed this blog, please take a look at our school’s blog page.
