We all look forward to the day when our preschooler will go to bed without a fuss. For many parents, bedtime is one of the most difficult parts of the day. Establishing a bedtime routine for our child can make going to bed much easier. Studies show that bedtime routines also help our children sleep better and for longer.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The first step in establishing a routine is deciding what your child will do every night. Brushing teeth, putting on pajamas, and using the bathroom are all necessary steps of the routine. Some parents choose to add in things like reading a story or taking a bath. Customize the routine to fit your child and your family!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Once you have determined steps that work for your family, your routine is set! Ask your child to help you make a chart for their bedtime routine. It can be as simple as printing it out from the computer or as fun as making it into a craft. Put the chart somewhere your child will see every night. Some parents choose the bathroom mirror and others choose by their child\u2019s bed. You could even add the chart into a plastic sleeve and have your child mark off steps with a dry erase marker.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>This chart empowers your child and helps them build confidence, as they feel like they are making their own decision to complete the steps instead of being told by their parents to do so. You can follow along the chart with them and ask, \u201cWhat\u2019s next?\u201d This feels more like a game than a bedtime routine!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>It is important to stick to a consistent bedtime each night when you are trying to establish a bedtime routine. This takes time and a lot of patience, but it will really pay off when both you and your child are getting more sleep!<\/span><\/p>\n
