Black History Month is an excellent time to introduce your child to African American figures who have influenced our world. Young children soak up new things easily, so take advantage of it by reading interesting books or watching inspirational movies with them. Here are some suggestions to get you started.
Books
- If a Bus Could Talk, by Faith Ringgold, is a story about an unusual bus that can talk! Not only does it talk, it tells young Marcie the true story of Rosa Parks and her role in the civil rights movement.
- Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom, by Carole Boston Weatherford, will introduce you to Harriet Tubman and the dangers she underwent to help fellow slaves find freedom through the Underground Railroad.
- I am Jackie Robinson, by Brad Meltzer, is great for little sports lovers. It will encourage children to be brave and do their best even when life doesn’t treat them fairly.
- The Little Plant Doctor: A Story About George Washington Carver, by Jean Marzollo, recounts the true story of young George and his love for plants. That love would make him into a wonderful, successful scientist as an adult.
Movies
- The Princess and the Frog is set in New Orleans in 1920. It tells the story of Tiana who works hard to make her dream of having her own restaurant come true. She unknowingly kisses a prince in the form of a frog and the two of them must work together to become human again before it’s too late.
- Akeelah and the Bee teaches perseverance. Akeelah didn’t come from the best neighborhood, and she didn’t have the best family life. She discovered her talent for spelling almost by accident, but with the support of her community she was determined to keep working until she could make it all the way to the National Spelling Bee.
So, go ahead and sit back, relax (maybe grab a snack), and enjoy Black History Month with your preschooler!
