Toys to Avoid Giving Your Preschooler This Holiday Season

So you want to make holiday shopping for your preschooler easy, but the toy aisle seems to go on forever. We all want to make our little ones happy, but sometimes we can go overboard when it comes to gift giving. When you’re shopping for your preschooler, it’s important to keep in mind that less is often more. Here are some tips on the kind of toys you should avoid giving a preschooler, to help you narrow down your decision this holiday season:

Expensive toys that will quickly break or lose their appeal.

Those $100+ toys may look exciting, and it’s normal for a parent to want to purchase the “best” for their child, but chances are they will get bored of them just as quickly as they appeared. Save your money and stick to cheaper options.

Toys with small parts that can easily be lost or swallowed.

Be careful with purchasing toys that have lots of tiny pieces – they’re just begging to be lost (or worse, swallowed). Choose toys with fewer parts or pieces that are too large to pose a choking hazard.

Battery-operated anything.

Toys that require batteries are not only a pain to keep up with (batteries die quickly and are expensive to replace), but they’re also terrible for the environment. Avoid them if at all possible, and if you cannot, invest in some rechargeable batteries.

Anything with sharp edges or corners.

Kids are already prone to bumps and bruises – there’s no need to make things worse by adding in pointy edges! Choose smooth, rounded toys instead so everyone can stay safe.

Non-educational toys.

Yes, those dolls and action figures are important, but try to find some balance by including some learning opportunities in there as well. Opt for puzzles, books, building blocks, instruments, etc. so your little one’s brain can get some exercise too.

With these simple tips in mind, shopping for your preschooler this holiday season can be a little easier. And don’t forget the most important tip for gift giving – choose something fun!
