Getting Your Preschooler Involved in Gardening

Getting Your Preschooler Involved in Gardening at Kids 'R' Kids Oakbrook, preschool, daycare, childcare

Gardening with your preschool can be a lot of fun. It is a project that will potentially yield tangible results. Through gardening, your preschooler will learn first hand where basic fruits and vegetables come from, gain environmental awareness, and reap knowledge about the life cycle.

What to plant?

You and your preschooler need to decide which plants you would enjoy growing. These can be vegetables, flowers, or even herbs. Sunflowers, lettuce, radishes, snow peas, cherry tomatoes, nasturtiums, bush beans, carrots, potatoes, and pumpkins are some of the easiest plants to grow and also have short growing seasons.

Where to plant?

Next, if you have room outdoors, section off an area specifically for your preschooler. Otherwise, take your preschooler shopping for containers to use for his garden. Be sure the container is large enough and deep enough to support what will be grown in it, or you may need to transplant it later.

How to plant?

Begin your plants indoors using seeds. Seeds need to be started in containers with individual sections to prevent root tangling. Allow your preschooler to help distribute soil into each container and then plant the seed. By providing warmth, sunlight, and water, the seeds should sprout in a short amount of time.

When to plant?

Through a little research or by reading many seed packets, you can learn when is the appropriate time to plant seeds in your area. If you move your sprouts outdoors too soon, cold temperatures could kill them. However, you do not want to wait too long and not have enough of the growing season left. When it is time to transplant sprouts, let your preschooler do it! Guide her on how to dig a hole and place the plant. Finish by appropriately watering the new plants.

Be sure to help your preschooler provide his plants with the correct amount of sunlight and water. He may also need some behind the scenes help to ensure his plants are growing well. In the end, growing a garden with your preschooler can be a fun and rewarding experience. What other project allows you to eat what you made?
