Outer Space Activities for Preschoolers

Outer Space Activities for Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Oakbrook, daycare, childcare, preschool

Does your preschooler take an interest in the sun, moon, or stars? No worries if not, as there are plenty of fun (and easy) outer space activities that you can still enjoy with your preschooler.

  • You do not have to spend all day building a rocket to get your preschooler’s imagination going. Search around the house together for a simple “baby-sized” rocket for your child to hold and fly around the room. Simple markers or a cheese-stick can do the trick. In the process, you can talk about the outer space places that your child may like to pretend to visit. If it is the moon, for example, set up a blanket in another room and have your preschooler pretend to “land” there.

  • Show your child an online video of someone walking on the moon. Have your child recreate what this looks like. You could use the same blanket from the previous idea to be the moon.

  • Find good children’s books at your local library about the planets. You can even read these books on your pretend moon blanket. Then, you and your child can use Play Doh to build the different planets and space rocks (or whatever interests your child the most).

  • Find children’s books about the stars. Afterwards, have your child paint different stars (that you either draw on paper or from templates that you print from online, etc).

  • Hide glow-in-the dark stars in different rooms. Have your preschooler move around and try to find them. Then, switch things up! Have your child hide them for you to find.

  • Look up the song, “Zoom, Zoom, Zoom, We’re Going to the Moon.” At the end, there is an opportunity to practice counting.

While some children will naturally show more excitement about things related to outer space than others, the processes of reading, creating, and pretending will allow your child to have a new appreciation for what is far beyond!
