Art is a wonderful way to teach preschoolers about letters, numbers, colors, shapes, and the world around us. Additionally, by unleashing their imagination and creating unique pieces of art, your child develops small motor skills and a sense of creative confidence. Try these fun educational activities and watch your preschooler learn!
Make a collage!
Create an abstract picture or collage by gluing different colored shape cut outs to paper. You can print these images online, or cut them out from magazines and newspapers. This fun activity will teach your tot about shapes and colors—and they won’t even realize they’re learning!
Make it 3D.
Think 3D when creating art with your child! Use buttons, seeds, string, tissue paper, and other items around the house, and watch your child’s vocabulary grow while discussing the process. This will take your art experience to an entirely new level and show them there’s more to art than meets the eye.
Get out the clay!
Think outside the “paint and color box” and get out the clay! You and your child will have loads of fun working with this medium. Roll 3D shapes and figures and go to town talking about their color, texture, and other characteristics. You can even turn it into a game—take turns creating clay figures and guessing what the other person made.
Let your preschooler decide.
Create a “process-focused” art experience by leaving all the choices entirely up to your child. Eliminate samples, step-by-step instructions, and the concepts of right and wrong. Instead, focus on exploration of techniques and materials to create something entirely unique and original. This will allow your preschooler to work freely without a care in the world.
Remember, art isn’t only about coloring inside the lines. Push your child to explore all areas of life, from painting to sculpting, and praise them for letting their imaginations take over. Happy painting!
