Cultivating thankfulness within your preschooler is an important step in your child\u2019s\u00a0development. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, November is the best time to\u00a0start reflecting with your child on the people, moments, and things that they are most\u00a0thankful for. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, here are a few activity ideas for you to try in\u00a0order to begin practicing thankfulness with your young one.<\/p>\n

Thankfulness Placemats<\/h3>\n

Using a sheet of construction paper or legal paper, help your preschooler write and draw\u00a0the things and memories that he or she is thankful for, regarding each member of your\u00a0family that will be present for Thanksgiving dinner. Perhaps your child wants to highlight\u00a0how thankful he or she is for trips to grandma\u2019s house, or playtime with a particular\u00a0cousin. Make each decorative placemat unique, then laminate them as a distinctive gift\u00a0for your loved ones on Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n

Build a Gratitude Journal<\/h3>\n

Journaling can be a great way to record memories, as well as important events that impact\u00a0your child\u2019s life. Using a small notebook, encourage your preschooler to write about their\u00a0experiences and what they are personally thankful for. Since many preschoolers don\u2019t\u00a0have a great grasp of writing just yet, play with the idea of an art journal, where they\u00a0draw pictures of their happy moments and memories from the past year. As an added\u00a0bonus, you can encourage your child to keep up with their \u201cThankfulness Journal\u201d year-round, so you can have a guide to reference next year when reflecting on positive\u00a0memories.<\/p>\n

Thankfulness Window Tree<\/h3>\n

Many family blogs encourage the creation of a \u201cthankfulness tree,\u201d which can take many\u00a0forms\u2014often created as a large cardboard tree with paper leaves with thankful items and\u00a0memories written on them. For the parent on a budget, get a window crayon or dry-erase\u00a0marker and draw a tree on your dining room window. Over the course of the month of\u00a0November, add leaves to the tree by encouraging your child to share things that they are\u00a0thankful for at every family dinner and writing the things on the leaves. By Thanksgiving Day, you will have a fun decoration to share with the entire family!<\/p>\n

Construction Paper Turkeys<\/h3>\n

Never count out this classic Thanksgiving craft. Using brown, yellow or orange\u00a0construction paper, trace your child\u2019s hand and cut out the silhouette. Your child can add\u00a0decorations to the turkey\u2019s head (the thumb) such as eyes and a beak with a crayon or by\u00a0gluing on additional construction paper. Then, encourage them to write the four things\u00a0they are most thankful for this year on the fingers. Additional feathers can be added to\u00a0your turkey by gluing more construction paper of varying colors between and behind the\u00a0fingers.<\/p>\n
