Chores for Preschoolers

Chores for Preschoolers

By introducing your preschooler to household chores, you are simultaneously introducing them to several other important life lessons. In a lot of houses chores are part of daily routines and involving your child in these routines, teaches them responsibility and cleanliness, while also giving mom and dad some help!

If you are eager to introduce the idea of chores to your child, but don’t know how, here are a few ideas to get you started!

  1. Put toys away
  2. Fill pet’s food bowl
  3. Make their bed
  4. Clear table
  5. Water flowers
  6. Bring in mail or newspaper

Although these tasks are small and simple, they are meaningful and allow your child to participate in tasks regardless of their age. In fact, your child’s age should be used to their advantage! Introducing them to chores and their expected capabilities at an early age will benefit you and them in the future.

With their participation in helping around the house, however, it is most necessary to give them praise for their work! Encouragement should start at the beginning and continue throughout the progression of the chore, not only when it is accomplished. This will make your child want to continue doing things to help!

Being consistent with what is expected of your child each week will also keep them interested in continuing. To help with this, create a chore chart or schedule that designates chores for family members!
