Fostering a love of reading begins at an early age. Books are an important resource for knowledge, entertainment, and comfort. Here are four tips to help you raise your preschooler to be a lifelong reader.<\/span><\/p>\n

Read Regularly<\/span><\/h4>\n

Reading does not have to just be a bedtime event. There are many opportunities to read throughout the day such as before a meal, a nap, or before getting ready to leave. Reading is a good way to help your preschooler manage their emotions and learn how to focus. Children also learn valuable skills such as new vocabulary words and new concepts. Regular reading is one way to get your child ready to learn how to read independently.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Child\u2019s Choice<\/span><\/h4>\n

Whether you are at the library or at home, give your preschooler a chance to choose which books he is interested in reading. This gives him a chance to practice making choices. Taking regular trips to the library will expose your child to a variety of literature. Many libraries also offer story times or programs to enhance early reading skills. This is a great way to build a positive connection between reading, other people, and other experiences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Repetition, Repetition\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

You may get tired of reading the same story over and over, but most children enjoy repetition. So, repeat favorite stories as often as your child wants! Repetition has several benefits for your preschooler. She gets enjoyment from knowing what to expect, she learns to recognize words on the page, she begins to associate words with meaning, and she may even memorize the story. Eventually, your preschooler will pick up a familiar book and \u201cread\u201d it by remembering what is on the pages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Create Connections<\/span><\/h4>\n

Create connections within the family by having siblings, grandparents, or other family members participate in reading to your preschooler. Model the importance of reading in your own life. Encourage your child to make connections with the characters in the books they are reading by inviting them to talk about the story. Discuss what the characters are like and predict what might happen next.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Research has shown that the best way to become a better reader is to read more! So, put down the screens and grab a book!<\/span><\/p>\n
