From lullabies to nursery rhymes, music and songs have many benefits for children as they grow. Introducing music, sound, and rhythm is important even from a young age. Singing songs can help children learn a language and build vocabulary. Playing an instrument can help preschoolers develop their small and large motor skills. The good news is that your child does not have to begin taking piano or guitar lessons in order to reap the benefits of music.

These homemade musical instruments for preschoolers give just the right amount of motivation to grab some crafting supplies and recycled materials to start creating your own instruments at home. Sing, dance, play, and have fun!

Maracas

Do you have any Easter eggs lying around from last month’s egg hunt? Put some raw rice or beans inside a plastic egg and tape the egg shut. Take two plastic spoons, place the egg in the middle of them, and then tape all three together. Use colorful duct tape or washi tape for some added fun, and then let the shaking and dancing begin!

Kazoos

First, have your preschooler decorate a toilet paper roll with paint, markers, or crayons. Next, cut a square of wax paper big enough to cover an opened end of the roll. Then secure the wax paper to the toilet paper roll with a rubber band. Finally, have the child hum, sing, or make noise into the uncovered end. They will love making music with these simple kazoos.

Tambourine

Hold two paper plates together face to face and punch holes around the edges of the plates about one or two inches apart in order to string yarn through the holes. Weave the yarn up through a hole, around the outside of the plate, and back through the same hole again. Tie a knot to secure the plates together. String a jingle bell through the yarn and then continue weaving the yard through the holes around the plate. Alternate the bells every other hole or more, depending on how many bells you have.

When you get back to the starting place, tie off the yarn again. Now, let your preschooler decorate the outsides of the plates. When they are ready to play their tambourine, they can shake it or tap the plate lightly with their hand.

If you enjoyed this blog, please take a look at our school’s blog page.
