They are aware of their own desires, but may not be able to recognize the desires and needs of others. Generosity can be difficult to grasp and may need to be modeled and taught. Preschoolers enjoy being showered with gifts, and doing fun activities that they find pleasing, engaging, and interesting. One way a preschooler learns to be generous is by watching how a parent behaves and responds to the needs of others. When your preschooler observes your generous behavior, help him understand why you are being generous. If possible find a way for your child to participate.

Here a few additional tips to help teach your preschooler be more generous:

When you purchase new gifts for your child, encourage him to purge some gently used toys and electronics, and give them to charity. Then do something fun with your child (like burgers and fries). Use the time to discuss how other children will be blessed by your child’s generosity.

Adopt a family in need. As a family, work with a non-profit organization or someone you know to offer gifts and food for a disadvantaged family. Sometimes, seeing a child in need will help your child embrace generosity.

Encourage your child to practice saying thank you. Show him how to recognize opportunities to help others.

Have a family dinner and allow each family member to express 3 reasons why they are grateful. Help your child understand that he feels grateful because of someone’s generosity, even if the generosity came from a parent.

Help your child understand that receiving gifts is a privilege for which we should all be grateful. Let your child know that sometimes he will receive and other times he should give. Also, help your child see the many advantages that he has like friends, family, and provisions. Let him know that some children are challenged in these areas and helping them should be a meaningful experience. Always model generosity in front of your child. If it takes a while for your child to catch on, that’s normal. Be patient and keep being generous. As your child grows and develops, he is more likely to embrace the same generosity that you have demonstrated.

If you enjoyed this blog and want to read more, click below for our blog from last month!
Cold Weather Preschool Activities

Want to learn more about Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of New Territory located in Sugar Land, Texas?
