National Poetry Month: Teaching Your Preschooler the Basics of Poetry

April is National Poetry Month, and there’s no better time to introduce poetry than when your child is in preschool! Most older students and even adults consider poetry to be something difficult or boring, but finding ways to engage children in poetry at an early age will increase vocabulary, literacy, and creativity.

Nursery Rhymes are a perfect introduction to poetry!

You’re probably already exposing your children to poetry just by singing simple songs to them. Familiar and well-loved nursery rhymes are great examples of poetry because of the simple rhymes, but they also can show the storytelling structure of a poem.

Rhyme Time!

Little talkers love rhyming games! Pick out a simple word and then take turns coming up with as many rhyming words as possible. This will increase your child’s vocabulary when you know words that they don’t and chances are you’ll get a good case of the giggles!

Count Syllables.

Chant the lyrics to a favorite song in the rhythm and clap along. Write them down and, with your preschooler, draw dots under each syllable and count them. How many syllables are in the whole poem? Which word has the most syllables? This activity will increase counting skills as well as vocabulary.

Identify Poetry.

The concept of a poem can be explained to a preschooler as simply as “something that looks interesting on the page and sounds interesting to the ears.” Poems can be very artistic on a page, so show your preschooler simple and fun types of poetry such as haiku, acrostics, and even this color poem idea.

Make them Laugh!

If nothing else, have fun with silly rhyming poetry from Shel Silverstein, Dr. Seuss, and Jack Prelutsky. These classics will keep your children giggling and inspire interest in poetry without them even realizing it!
