preschoolers, preschool, summer, fun, swim, sunSummer brings endless opportunities for preschoolers to run, play, and explore the world around them. From backyard fun to family outings, it’s a season full of excitement and discovery. With all that activity, it’s important for families to keep a few simple safety habits in mind so children can enjoy every moment safely.

How Can You Create a Safe Outdoor Play Environment?

Before your child heads outside to play, take a few minutes to check the environment. Look for things like hot playground equipment, sharp edges, or uneven surfaces that could cause trips and falls.

A helpful tip is to test playground surfaces with your hand—if it feels too hot for you, it’s too hot for your child. Encourage your preschooler to wear shoes when playing outside and remind them to walk (not run) on certain surfaces like pool decks or wet grass.

You can also set simple boundaries, such as where your child is allowed to play, so they feel safe while still having the freedom to explore.

What Should Preschoolers Know About Stranger Safety?

As families spend more time outside during the summer, it’s a good opportunity to gently introduce basic safety concepts. Preschoolers don’t need to feel scared, but they can learn simple rules that help keep them safe.

Teach your child to stay close to trusted adults and to never go anywhere without asking first. You can practice this through role-playing by asking, “What would you do if someone you don’t know asked you to come with them?” Reinforce that they should always say “no” and find a trusted adult.

Keeping these conversations calm and age-appropriate helps children understand safety without creating fear.

How Can You Stay Safe on the Go?

Summer often means trips to parks, stores, or family events. Busy environments can be overwhelming for preschoolers, so it’s helpful to prepare them ahead of time.

Talk through expectations before you arrive, such as holding hands in parking lots or staying close in crowded areas. You might even make it a fun challenge: “Let’s see how well you can stay by my side while we walk!”

Dressing your child in bright or easy-to-spot clothing can also make it easier to keep track of them in busy places.
